Orin Langelle: Portraits of Struggle
Orin Langelle’s work is of a photojournalistic style and captures a wide range of social struggles as they have taken place over the past four decades all over the globe. “From rebel territory behind military lines in Chiapas, Mexico, to the front lines of protests against the World Bank,” you’ll see communities, workers, activists and even Indigenous Peoples as they struggle to overcome human rights abuses, environmental issues and oppression. This is an excellent show to see if you are looking to improve your documentary photography style.

The Grain of the Present
This exhibit features works by some of the standout names in street photography including Diane Arbus, Gary Winogrand, Robert Adams, Lewis Baltz, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Lee Friedlander, Nicholas Nixon, Stephen Shore and Henry Wessel. Works by these talented artists capturing everyday happenings will find their place “alongside six contemporary practitioners of the medium—Eamonn Doyle, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Ed Panar, Alec Soth, Awoiska van der Molen, and Vanessa Winship. This generation embodies Wessel’s notion of being “actively receptive”: rather than searching for particular subjects, they are open to photographing anything around them.” The show promises to be a street photographer’s delight so catch it if you can.

Father Figure: Exploring Alternate Notions of Black Fatherhood – Zun Lee
The photographer behind this exhibit, Zun Lee, “has embedded himself in the lives of African American families, many of them from the Bronx and Harlem,” since 2011. He captures intimate details of daily life happenings and his project tells the story of real father figures. This project works towards “dispelling stereotypes of Black masculinity and absent fathers.” There are some extremely compelling images here. Be sure to check this one out, especially if you need inspiration to start or complete a street photography project.

Shawn Walker
The Steven Kasher Gallery is presenting the first ever solo exhibition of Shawn Walker. “The exhibition surveys Walker’s evolving and wide-ranging work from the 1960s through the 1990s and proposes his importance to the photography and art of our time. Embracing and melding abstraction, surrealism, social documentary and street photography, Walker’s work challenges the myth of a singular African-American aesthetic. Each body of work marries transcendental spiritual philosophies with contemporary urban representations of African heritage. From his 30- year study of parades to his on-going series on shadows and reflections, Walker’s work is connected to profound rituals, ceremonies and masking found in African culture.” Compelling and deeply meaningful, this body of work will inspire you to delve deeper into matters of society and culture as you shoot the streets.

Patrick D. Pagnano: Empire Roller Disco in the Project Space
Who doesn’t love a good roller disco photo series? This particular project was shot the famous Empire Roller Disco in Brooklyn, New York at its peak in the 1980s. It was a time marked by riots and dramatic community shifts, but Pagnano’s images focus on the “ability of a space to change the narrative and experiences of its community.” This series is uplifting and (on a practical note,) a great show of good photography taken in dark spaces with moving subjects.

Luca Campigotto: Nocturne
This gallery features some beautiful shots of urban landscapes and architecture taken at night. In the exhibit you’ll see night views of Jerusalem’s Western Wall, London, Hong Kong, Milan and more. Here’s a bit more about the show: “Campigotto’s unique style is to train his camera upon feats of nature and engineering that dwarf the individual. Photographing at night imbues an extra shroud of mystery – the sweeping architectural views appear virtually empty, the only sign of activity being the occasional stream of taillights shooting through the darkened streets or vessels on the water. The glow of multi-colored lights permeating the sky yields a spectacular palette not visible to the naked eye.” If you love night shooting, architecture, lines, even a bit of surrealism, this show is for you.

Bill Gordon: Photographs of the Street
Bill Gordon says, “Street Photography is about the world of man and his influences. It is not always perfect in a technical sense. Fancy frames and vivid colors are nonessential. Predominately, natural light and minimal equipment are used to capture the subject. Super optics and the best lens do not always guarantee good pictures. However, it is important to have a strong image, one that reports the subject and tells a story. Great photographers use their minds and hearts as well as the proper equipment.” Wise words and a beautiful, pure street photography gallery.
