Photo of the Week: Youth Protest of REDD UN Climate Summit, Cancun, Mexico 2010

This week’s photo is dedicated to the memory of Honduran activist and Goldman Environmental Prize winner Berta Cáceres on the two year anniversary of her assassination for successfully fighting devastating hydroelectric dams in the country.

The photo is from this exhibit which was dedicated to her.

Photo: This youth activist along with others, were forced onto a bus and evicted from the 2010 UN Climate Conference in Cancun, Mexico following a march out of the event in protest of the exclusion of youth voices from UN negotiations regarding their future.

The REDD signs stand for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, one of the most controversial and opposed climate mitigation schemes proposed in the UN climate summits–especially among Indigenous Peoples. Activists and youth around the world have protested REDD in solidarity with the Indigenous Peoples who would be impacted by it. photo: Orin Langelle
